Le Nichoir Wild Bird Rehabilitation Centre in Hudson, Québec is organizing an art fundraiser entitled The Wildcard. It’s happening at the old Dominion Textile building on the Lachine Canal in Montréal. The sale will raise money for a new conservation centre.

Artists from the area were asked to donate artworks on 5 x 7 inch cards in any medium, media and content of their choosing. My four donated works were on the reintroduction of wild turkeys to Eastern Ontario. These were done in gouache and ink.

In 2009 I contributed some illustrations to the online-food magazine Spezzatino. Spezzatino is published by the Healthy Food Bank, based in Toronto, and has a unique format in that each volume is themed around one food. The goal of the magazine is to accumulate an encyclopedic resource that covers the history, cultural significance, production and cooking of healthful foods.

I did two projects for the Canada Aviation Museum’s 2009 holiday programming. The focus of this year’s holiday programming was Canadian naval aircraft; 2010 is the Canadian Navy’s centennial year. Of particular focus for some of the activities was WWII naval pilot Hampton Gray. He received the Victoria Cross for air attacks on Japan just before the end of WWII. Unfortunately, Gray was one of the last Canadians to die in the war when he was shot down after sinking a Japanese escort vessel.

In response to the focus on Gray, I developed a workshop that used Golden Age Comics to make WWII naval pilots relevant to today’s children. Although the dates of this era of comics history vary, Golden Age Comics were created during 1938 and 1945. These comics introduced superheroes and the serialized comic book that is so intimately connected with the superhero genre.
