Word is a small bookstore in Greenpoint, Brooklyn’s most northern neighbourhood. It has a huge basement space to hold writing and arts workshops and other activities. This is where I held a comics jam on Sunday, August 5.
I had a good turnout of 12 participants. Some very interesting comics arose from our mixed group of children, parents and young adults. We did a two part activity. The first part was a traditional comics jam that involved passing a piece of paper through a group of people who each contributed one panel to a collective narrative. The second part had participants select two comics made in the first activity. They then connected the narrative of the two comics through another sequence of panels.

Oh, there's a schnauzer.

Post-comics jam a friend and I went to The Bean, an independent coffee shop in Manhattan. As I was ordering my very excellent white tea, the cashier asked if I wanted a “butterphone” with my tea. I had no idea what a butterphone was so I went along with it until the cashier explained to me that his friend actually melted a stick of butter on an iphone, thus the term “butterphone”. I drew the napkin comic below and gave it to the cashier.

A big thanks to Jenn, Event Manager at Word, for making this event possible and supplying its materials.
